Jets release 7-time Pro Bowler Nick Mangold

The New York Jets have parted ways with one of their longest serving players.

The Jets released seven-time Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold on Saturday after 11 seasons with the team.

Mangold broke the news on Twitter minutes before the official announcement, thanking the organization and the Jets' fan base:

The Jets save $9.075 million by releasing Mangold, and by doing it now, they'll give him a head start in free agency.

The 33-year-old doesn't intend to retire and is expected to have several suitors, in what is a weak free-agent center market, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Arguably the greatest center of his generation, the 2006 first-round pick was named a first-team All-Pro in 2009 and 2010 and a second-team All-Pro in 2011, to go along with his Pro Bowl selections.

Mangold was a consistent presence throughout his tenure, missing only four starts prior to last season. His play began to drop off in the last few years, however, and he suffered a season-ending ankle injury last season.

His release hints that the Jets are about to start a significant rebuild, with several other big-name veteran players like Brandon Marshall and Darrelle Revis in danger of following Mangold out the door.
