NFL awards 16 teams compensatory draft picks

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

The NFL announced Friday that 32 compensatory draft picks will be doled out at this year's NFL draft. Sixteen teams will receive at least one extra draft choice.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lost more or better free agents than they acquired in the previous year. The value of each compensatory draft choice is determined by "a formula based on salary, playing time, and postseason honors."

The Miami Dolphins earned the highest compensatory pick this year due to the departure of defensive lineman Olivier Vernon.

A new league rule approved in 2015 allows compensatory picks to be traded.

The Cleveland Browns will send their compensatory third-round pick to the New England Patriots as part of their October trade of linebacker Jamie Collins.
