Dennis Pitta's return from multiple major hip injuries was one of the Baltimore Ravens' few positive stories in 2016, but now the team could be preparing to move on from its veteran tight end.

The Ravens may balk at paying Pitta the $5.5 million he is owed in 2017, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, and he is a candidate for release.

Pitta led all tight ends with 86 catches last season, but will turn 32 this summer and remains a major injury risk.

The Ravens are among the NFL teams with the least salary cap space entering free agency, so they might decide paying Pitta is a luxury they can't afford.

It's also possible the team is floating this rumor now in an attempt to get Pitta to renegotiate his deal and lower his cap hit.
