Report: Romo expects to be released, believes he can play 2-3 more years

Tom Brady's success at age 39 could be inspiring his peers to seek to do the same.

At age 37, and despite an extensive injury history, Tony Romo believes he still has two-to-three years left as an NFL starter, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

It won't be for the Dallas Cowboys, who have hitched their wagon to Dak Prescott.

Romo expects to be released by the Cowboys rather than traded, Werder notes.

If and when he hits the open market, Romo will surely draw interest from teams looking to upgrade their starting quarterback. But it's unlikely any team will bank on Romo, who has endured numerous major back injuries and broken his collarbone on multiple occasions, as a long-term option.

Brady played some of the best football of his career at age 39, but the only major injury he's suffered in his career is a torn ACL in 2008.

Romo's body is surely in significantly worse shape. Brett Favre might be a better comparison. Favre took a beating in his career, but managed to play at a high level as he approached age 40 through sheer will and determination.
