Report: Developer contacted NFL about new San Diego stadium

Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

The prospects of football in San Diego refuse to go away.

As local officials reportedly expressed interest in becoming a destination for the Oakland Raiders if their Las Vegas relocation falls through, a new developer has began planning for a new stadium.

San Diego businessman Doug Manchester contacted NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about a desire to build a new stadium on the land currently occupied by Qualcomm Stadium, according to a letter obtained by Kevin Acee
of The San Diego Union-Tribune
, a newspaper Manchester previously owned.

In the letter, Manchester claims he's "assembled a powerful group of associates" who are planning to "construct a new 70,000-seat stadium and surrounding development." The letter also says the stadium could be "an immediate alternative" for the Raiders, if their move to Las Vegas falls through. The group also states they are open to working with the Chargers, "other NFL owners, or a new ownership group," either as a partner or a tenant.

Despite recently losing two major financial contributors, the Raiders have maintained their confidence in the move working. League owners will vote on the relocation in March.

The NFL and Manchester both declined comment.
