Rams QB coach: Goff's ceiling is 'really high'

The Los Angeles Rams' new quarterbacks coach, Greg Olson, is the man who is tasked with turning Jared Goff into a franchise player.

Despite a disappointing rookie season for last year's No. 1 overall pick, Olson believes Goff's ceiling is "really high."

Olson studied the former Cal standout when he was running the Oakland Raiders' offense from 2013-14, with their stadiums just 12 miles apart, and his positive impression of the young pivot from that time remains.

"Nothing that I’ve watched so far has deterred me from that same evaluation," Olson said, according to Alden Gonzelez of ESPN. "I'm just real excited to get a chance to get with him and have a chance to work with him."

One of Goff's struggles during his first season in the NFL was his inability to push the ball downfield. His 5.31 yards-per-attempt average was the worst in the NFL among quarterbacks who had more than 200 attempts, with only Brock Osweiler close to Goff.

Olson said the first thing he looks at when evaluating quarterbacks is determining their arm talent, and despite Goff's poor play, he thinks the 22-year-old's arm is "tremendous."

"That's the start, in my opinion," Olson said. "When you look at evaluating the position, it's, 'What kind of arm talent does that player have?' Certainly a very intelligent player when you look at his test scores and what he was able to do as a student. I just think there’s a lot of intangibles that we’ve all heard about him growing up, from high school through college and the NFL. Tremendous work ethic. So, there’s a lot of things there."
