Though his first two years in Jacksonville have been disappointing, the Jaguars opted to keep Julius Thomas on their roster on Friday, ensuring $3 million of his contract and that he will return in 2017, according to Mike DiRocco of ESPN.

The Jaguars had until Friday to cut ties with the tight end before the bonus would kick in.

Thomas inked a five-year, $46-million deal with the Jaguars in free agency in 2015. He responded with 455 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2015 and just 281 yards and four scores in 2016.

Jacksonville will begin anew in 2017 with Doug Marrone as head coach and former coach Tom Coughlin back in the fold as the team's vice president of football operations.
