Jones: Thought of Romo playing for another NFC team 'bothers the heck out of me'

It appears inevitable that Tony Romo will be playing for the second team of his career in 2017, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn't looking forward to the sight of his longtime quarterback playing without a star on the side of his helmet, especially if he lands in the NFC.

"That bothers the heck out of me because I know wherever he goes, he'll start. I know wherever he goes, he'll compete, absent injury," Jones said Friday on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM, according to Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPN.

"We saw a guy (Tom Brady) several years older than him win a Super Bowl. I think he's that kind of player, so you've dealt in your own conference, somebody that has the possibility to come back and beat us."

It's expected that the 36-year-old will be traded or released this offseason after losing the starting job to Dak Prescott. Despite his age and injury history, Romo will likely have multiple suitors on the open market.

Jones said that, because of his relationship with Romo, he expects they'll work out a move that is beneficial for both parties.

"We've got a lot to do. We'll get it sorted out. That's what it's all about," Jones said. "Relationships come into play here.

"When you’ve got the kind of relationship I've got with him, and the type of person that Tony Romo is, we'll get this worked out."
