Report: Cowboys a potential landing spot for Adrian Peterson

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

There could be two star running backs in Dallas next season, as a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that if the Minnesota Vikings and Adrian Peterson can't agree on a restructured contract, the Cowboys could be a potential landing spot for the standout rusher.

Peterson reiterated his desire to return to Minnesota on ESPN's First Take last month, but mentioned the New York Giants, Houston Texans, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as teams he could consider in free agency.

The potential move seems a bit curious, as the Cowboys' star rookie, Ezekiel Elliott, led the league in rushing this past season. Backup Alfred Morris carried the ball just 69 times in 2016, finishing with 243 yards rushing.

The Vikings hold a team option on the Texas native for the 2017 season that would pay him $11.75 million in base salary, as well as a $6-million roster bonus. The team must decide by March 9 whether to pick up the option on his contract or let him walk as a free agent.

Peterson has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and only appeared in three games last season after suffering a torn meniscus in Week 2.
