Report: Falcons choose red jerseys for Super Bowl

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons will wear their red home jerseys in next Sunday's Super Bowl LI, which means the New England Patriots will be in white.

The Patriots confirmed the news to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

The Falcons are the "home" team for the game (it rotates annually between the AFC and NFC) and therefore had first choice of attire.

Red is the color the Falcons are best known for this century, but teams wearing colored jerseys haven't fared well in recent Super Bowls. The white team has taken home the Lombardi Trophy in 11 of the past 12 title games, with only the Green Bay Packers bucking the trend.

The Falcons wore black in their only previous Super Bowl appearance, which they lost to the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots are 2-1 in the Super Bowl when wearing white, 2-2 in blue, and 0-1 in red.
