Report: Texans won't replace offensive coordinator; O'Brien to call plays

After mutually parting ways with offensive coordinator George Godsey on Monday, the Houston Texans do not plan to fill the position and head coach Bill O'Brien will assume play-calling duties, reports John McClain of The Houston Chronicle.

Receivers coach Sean Ryan will move to quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant Pat O'Hara will also continue to work with the pass throwers, adds McClain.

Houston is also reportedly moving linebackers coach Mike Vrabel to defensive coordinator and keeping Romeo Crennel, who previously ran the defense, as an assistant head coach.

While O'Brien was hired in 2014 with the expectation of building a strong offensive presence, the Texans have yet to finish a season with an offense ranked in the top half of the league, sinking to 29th in total yards this season. The recent coaching moves should allow O'Brien to have more control over the unit he's supposed to specialize in.

After last offseason's key offensive free-agent additions didn't add up to an improved performance in 2016, the Texans appear to be changing their coaching approach as a way to get the desired results.
