McDaniels bowing out of 49ers' coaching search

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has backed out of the San Francisco 49ers' coaching search, both for family reasons and to focus on the playoffs.

"At this time it’s just best for my family and myself to remain here in New England," McDaniels told reporters Monday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

McDaniels was reportedly conflicted about taking the job in the first place. He has a young family with four children and does not want to uproot them for a cross-country move, especially if it's not going to be for the long-term. McDaniels left the Patriots in 2009 for the Denver Broncos' head coaching position, but was fired during his second season.

While McDaniels and Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia were expected to be among the hottest head coaching candidates on the market, both will reportedly remain in New England for at least one more season.

It's expected that either Seattle Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable or Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will get the 49ers job, as they're the only two candidates who have interviewed for the position and are still available.

McDaniels and the Patriots will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.
