Rams COO: Age not a factor in hiring youngest coach in NFL history

The Los Angeles Rams didn't set out to make history when they chose Sean McVay as their next head coach.

Instead, they were enticed to hire the 30-year-old as their next head coach based on the glowing reviews from the NFL community. When asked to describe McVay, "brilliant," "genius," "star," and "special" were among the terms used.

"Age is not a factor here. This is really about Sean's talents, his ability to lead and communicate, and what we think that will do for the Los Angeles Rams," Rams COO Kevin Demoff said in Friday's introductory press conference.

"There's a difference between youth and maturity. Sean's very mature."

As the offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins from 2014 to 2016, McVay's offenses climbed from 26th in points per game his first year on the job to 12th this season and from 13th in yards per game to third in the league.

McVay has been given a lot of the credit for the growth of the Redskins' offense, but, as a first-time head coach, he vows to cultivate a "we not me" culture within the locker room.

"It's not about me. It's about surrounding yourself with great people," McVay said.

He did however confirm that he will begin his foray in Los Angeles as the team's chief play-caller.

"We're going to continue to get to know our players, figure out what they do best and fit our scheme to their skill sets," he said.

At the controls of his offense will be the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, quarterback Jared Goff. Goff started the last seven games of the season and will be the cornerstone of the team going forward.

"That quarterback position is the most important position. When you have a guy ... you have a chance to compete week in and week out," McVay said.

At the press conference, the Rams brass also confirmed Les Snead will remain the team's general manager and John Fassel will return as the special teams coach.
