The Los Angeles Rams have come to an agreement with Wade Phillips that will make him their new defensive coordinator, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The 69-year-old coach signed a three-year deal to take over the No. 9-ranked defense in the league, a source told Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports.

Phillips was a popular pick to fill the defensive coaching gaps on a number of teams. He was reportedly set to interview for the Washington Redskins' job on Friday. Instead, he'll join a staff led by Sean McVay, the youngest head coach in NFL history.

Phillips was a surprise free agent after his defensive unit led the Broncos to a Super Bowl title in 2015 and finished this season as the best pass defense in the NFL.

He was let go after the season, however, following head coach Gary Kubiak's retirement.
