The Buffalo Bills have announced that Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has been hired as their next head coach.

The 42-year-old has 18 seasons of NFL experience on his coaching resume. He spent the previous six seasons overseeing the Panthers' defense, including a four-year span in which the team ranked among the top 10 units in the NFL.

McDermott replaces Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn (once considered the front-runner to be hired on a permanent basis) and Rex Ryan, whom Lynn replaced prior to Week 17.

McDermott and Bills general manager Doug Whaley, who's being retained by the team, will be tasked with ending the NFL's longest playoff drought of 17 seasons.

Former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is rumored to be on the Bills' radar to become the team's new offensive coordinator.
