Koetter doesn't commit to Aguayo: 'No problem moving on from a draft choice'

Roberto Aguayo's status as a second-round draft selection won't necessarily guarantee him a roster spot next fall.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter didn't hold back with his assessment when speaking on the struggles of the kicking game at Monday's season-ending press conference.

"As far as the investment in Roberto and where we picked him, we were all on board with that," Koetter said, according to Trevor Sikkema of PewterReport.com. "That’s not going to change. We're never going to bring that back. That happened and Roberto was our kicker, and like any other player, if he has that Buc jersey on and he's out there then I'm 100 percent in.

"With that said, our field-goal percentage of this year is not good enough. Now that's not the only stat that's good enough, but that wasn't good enough. Jason and I have already talked, and I think it's already proven, that we have no problem moving on from a draft choice and playing somebody who wasn't drafted. Nothing is a given and if they're not the best player, then I can be pretty certain in saying they won't be out there."

Koetter also indicated the team would bring in competition for Aguayo heading into the 2017 season, via Jenna Laine of ESPN.

The Buccaneers made Aguayo the highest-drafted kicker in over a decade by selecting him with the No. 59 overall pick in last April's draft.

While such a pick could have proved to be a worthy investment if the Florida State product translated his college success to the NFL level, that's not how things worked out.

Missing another two kicks in Sunday's regular-season finale saw Aguayo finish his rookie year with conversions on just 22-of-31 field goals and 32-of-34 extra points.
