Peterson ruled out vs. Bears; may mark end of Vikings tenure

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will not play Sunday against the Chicago Bears, in what may mark the end of his time with the organization.

Peterson returned from a torn meniscus to play in Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts but was ruled out of last week's contest against the Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings hold a team option on Peterson's contract for 2017 and if exercised, the seven-time Pro Bowler would be owed $18 million. However, it's likely the Vikings opt to move on from Peterson, who's now suffered two major knee injuries over the past six seasons.

Peterson holds numerous franchise records for the Vikings, and has been the team's franchise player since being selected seventh overall in 2007.
