Mariota out for season with fractured fibula

Reinhold Matay / USA TODAY Sports

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a fractured fibula in Saturday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and will miss the rest of the season, head coach Mike Mularkey announced.

Matt Cassel - who replaced Mariota versus Jacksonville - will presumably act as the team's starter for the regular-season finale against the Houston Texans, which could be for the AFC South title if Houston loses later on Saturday.

Mariota was carted off the field and had an air cast on his lower leg.

While the Titans' playoff hopes are still alive, the loss of their star quarterback could be too much for them to overcome.

The second-year pivot was in the midst of a breakout season, throwing for 3,418 yards and 25 touchdowns against just nine interceptions.
