Titans' Mariota carted off vs. Jaguars with air cast on ankle

Logan Bowles / USA TODAY Sports

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota left Saturday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with what appears to be a significant ankle injury.

Mariota was fitted for an air cast and carted to the locker room after having his leg caught underneath him while trying to escape a defender on a third-quarter sack.

The Titans ruled him out for the remainder of the game just moments later.

Updates will presumably be given after the game, but an air cast typically indicates broken bones. Any such injury would almost certainly bring his season to an end.

The 2015 first-round pick took a considerable step forward after a promising rookie year, as he entered Week 16 completing 62.2 percent of his passes for 3,327 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Veteran signal-caller Matt Cassel will lead the offense for the remainder of the game, and potentially in next week's regular-season finale.
