Cardinals send Tyrann Mathieu to IR

Joe Camporeale / USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals have elected to shut down one of their star defenders as a disappointing season reaches its conclusion.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu was officially placed on season-ending injured reserve Friday as a result of the shoulder issue that had him in and out of the lineup over the past few weeks.

Mathieu had missed four of Arizona's previous five games before making his return to action in last week's loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The 24-year-old, who made a quick recovery from last year's knee injury to be ready for Week 1, will now look to get back to full health in advance of offseason activities. His 2016 campaign comes to an end after tallying 35 tackles, one interception, and one sack across 10 starts.
