New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul underwent sports hernia surgery Wednesday and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season, ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports.

Pierre-Paul's recovery time is estimated at six weeks, leaving a chance he could return for the NFC title game or Super Bowl, should the Giants advance to that point.

After a tumultuous 2015 season that began with a fireworks incident that permanently disfigured Pierre-Paul's right hand and ended with one sack in eight games played, Pierre-Paul has enjoyed a bounce-back season.

Through 12 games this year, he has seven sacks, three forced fumbles and eight passes knocked down.

The 27-year-old is playing under a one-year deal and will now head to unrestricted free agency on the heels of a second straight season cut short by injury.
