Cowboys' Garrett: Romo to stay ready if called upon

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett met with Tony Romo on Wednesday morning, the day after the veteran quarterback made a heartfelt concession to rookie Dak Prescott.

Garrett informed the media Wednesday afternoon that Romo will see an increase in snaps in practice as the focus going forward will be to "prepare to play," according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN.

Though he has officially been relegated to a backup role, Garrett impressed on Romo that things can change at a moment's notice, as Romo has learned through painful injuries of his own.

"He's going to get ready for the opportunity to play if called upon and be a great teammate each and every day," Garrett said, Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram writes.

The practice schedule has been altered to allow Romo some time with the first-team offense, Todd Archer of ESPN reports, a sensible move made to keep the quarterback fresh in case of emergency.

However, the move to cement Prescott's role as starting QB was a necessary one. Garrett told Romo he had to make the best decision for the Cowboys right now, according to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"We certainly don't want any of our players looking over their shoulders. We want to instill confidence," he said, according to Darlington.

As far as Romo's five-minute written statement is concerned, Garrett was impressed.

"I thought he did a really nice job sharing with people where he is," Garrett said, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports. "He and I had a really good visit today about the focus that he needs to have today in preparing for what his role is going to be on Sunday if all goes well this week."
