Fisher: Goff debuting as starter 'an exciting time'

The future is now in Los Angeles.

Following up the earlier announcement of a quarterback change, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher spoke Tuesday about the decision to have No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff debut as the starter Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

"It's an exciting time for us," Fisher told reporters, via Joe Curley of The Ventura County Star. "I'm excited to watch him play. I'm excited to watch him prepare this week."

The change comes on the heels of a nine-game stretch to open the season in which the Rams ranked 31st in total offense with Case Keenum at the helm.

Goff struggled in limited preseason reps, but it was only a matter of time before the team gave him the opportunity to prove himself in extended regular-season action.

The meaningful snaps will be crucial long-term for the former Cal standout, as there's only so much Goff can learn from the sidelines in making the difficult adjustment from his quarterback-friendly college system to a pro-style NFL offense.

In the short-term, the Rams will hope Goff's ability to make throws to all levels of the field will pose more of a threat to opposing secondaries, and thus create favorable matchups for Todd Gurley and the running game.
