The New Orleans Saints had a plan to shore up their depleted secondary, and that plan included trading for Cleveland Browns corner Joe Haden before today's 4 p.m. deadline, sources informed ESPN's Ed Werder.

The Browns were expected to be one of very few teams willing to sell their marquee talent at the trade deadline, but no deal was made.

New Orleans has had to navigate the year with corners P.J. Williams, Sterling Moore, Ken Crawley, and Delvin Breaux all out to some degree with various injuries. As a result, New Orleans owns the league's 29th-ranked pass defense.

According to Werder, however, the asking price for Haden was determined to be too high.

The Saints are right up against the cap and have allotted just 14 percent of their annual figure to their secondary, much of which is tied up in safety Jairus Byrd.

A deal for Haden would have been a departure in team philosophy.
