Report: Chiefs optimistic Charles will play in limited role vs. Saints

The Kansas City Chiefs are optimistic Jamaal Charles will be able to play in Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints despite the star running back suffering from knee swelling in Thursday's practice, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Chiefs reportedly will test Charles - who missed the first three games as he recovered from a torn ACL in 2015 - during pregame warmups, but believe he'll be able to handle a limited workload, with Spencer Ware set to take the majority of the carries.

Charles was limited in Friday's practice after experiencing swelling in his surgically repaired knee, and was listed as questionable for Sunday's game.

With the veteran back's injury history, it's likely the Chiefs will be extremely cautious with him, especially since Ware has excelled as the lead runner in his absence.

Charles had been brought along slowly this season, with Kansas City giving him two touches during his first game in Week 4 and 11 touches in his second game in Week 6.
