New York Giants kicker Josh Brown was placed on the commissioner's exempt list Friday and won't play for the team again, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Jordan Raanan.

The move comes after details emerged this week that Brown admitted to multiple incidents of abuse against his then-wife. The veteran kicker was barred from traveling to London with the team for its game Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

While on the exempt list, Brown is barred from practicing or attending games, but can visit the team's facility and attend meetings and non-football activities with the club's permission.

"Commissioner (Roger) Goodell has placed you on the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt list on a limited and temporary basis to permit the league fully to review the materials and determine whether further action is necessary," Adolpho Birch, the NFL's senior vice president of labor policy and league affairs, wrote in a statement to Brown. "We expect to conduct this review expeditiously and make any appropriate adjustments to your roster status in a timely manner."

Brown was suspended for the first game of this season for a domestic violence incident he referred to as "one moment." However, police documents published this week reveal Brown admitted to multiple incidents of abuse. The league promised to review the new information and move forward based on its personal conduct policy.

Brown has three days to appeal being placed on the exempt list.

He signed a two-year, $4-million contract with the Giants in April with $1 million guaranteed. The team recently signed free-agent kicker Robbie Gould to handle kicking duties in Brown's absence.

In 2014, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and then-Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy were placed on the exempt/commissioner's permission list while legal proceedings were ongoing for their separate violent incidents. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Josh McNary was also placed on the list in 2015 after he was charged in a sexual assault case.
