Bears' Fox: Cutler 'getting closer' to return

Andrew Weber / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears could be getting Jay Cutler back sooner rather than later.

Forced to rely on third-string quarterback Matt Barkley for much of Thursday's game, relief could come in the form of their No. 1 starter in the near future.

Bears head coach John Fox revealed after Thursday's loss to the Green Bay Packers that Cutler is nearing a return.

"When he's cleared medically, we'll have him out there," Fox said postgame. "When exactly that's going to be, I can't answer that. He's getting closer."

Cutler started the first two games of the year, but sprained his right thumb in Week 2. Backup Brian Hoyer started every game since, but he sustained a broken arm Thursday. Barkley came in in relief and completed six of 15 passes for 81 yards and two interceptions.

The Bears have 10 days to prepare their starter for their next game, which comes against the Minnesota Vikings on Halloween night.
