Favre: Romo should sit behind Prescott until he's needed

The Dallas Cowboys are approaching a difficult decision as Tony Romo closes in on his return from injury.

Despite the early success of rookie quarterback Dak Prescott, turning back to their veteran signal-caller with sights set on a playoff run has long been thought to be the sensible move.

But a certain Hall of Fame quarterback can be counted among the increasingly vocal group that opposes that idea.

Making an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday, Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre explained why he thinks Romo should take it upon himself to take a back seat until he may be needed.

"You have to look at the dynamics right now and they really are hitting on all cylinders," Favre said, via Drew Davison of The Star-Telegram. "So, this is hypothetically thinking, if you are Tony you say, 'You know what, as much as I want to play, I don't want to press the issue. I want to play, but I'm going to let it play out right now and it is probably better if Dak starts struggling and then they bring me in rather than they put me in and then all of a sudden we're not hitting on all cylinders and everyone’s like, 'Ah, they should have got rid of Tony, blah, blah.' You know what I mean?

"I'm not saying that you tell (Jason) Garrett or Jerry Jones, 'Look, I don't want to play.' I think, you want to play but, look, I don't want to mess up the dynamics of the team. If we get to a point where we’re struggling then it is time for me to come in. Now, I know that’s a hard thing to do. … I just think you are better if you wait 'til you are really needed. And I mean no disrespect whatsoever to Tony."

Prescott's most recent performance, completing 75 percent of his passes for 227 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals, gave him an even stronger case to keep the starting job.

In speaking about Romo's recently scheduled MRI, though, owner Jerry Jones reiterated a stance that the the four-time Pro Bowler will return to the lead role upon being cleared to play.

Romo is tentatively expected to make his return to the lineup following the club's Week 7 bye, meaning Sunday's matchup with the Packers could be Prescott's last start.
