Josh Norman, Steve Smith denounce notion of rivalry ahead of Week 5

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith and Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman are two of the most outspoken, abrasive players in the NFL. Therefore, it was surprising to see both players express mutual respect for each other ahead of Sunday's game.

Norman and Smith were teammates for two years as members of the Carolina Panthers, but shared an oft-contentious relationship during the 2012-13 seasons.

However, it appears that any animosity has been put behind them.

"It's no need to make it about two individuals," Smith said to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. "If the center doesn't snap the ball, the linemen doesn't block and quarterback doesn't throw, a receiver is obsolete. To make it about Josh and all that stuff - it isn't about Josh. It's about the Baltimore Ravens playing better football for four quarters in all three phases of the game."

Norman echoed Smith's sentiment.

"I don't got anything against him," Norman said. "He's just doing what he's always has been doing since he played ball - making plays and going out there and doing his little dance that I think is super funny. His playmaking ability speaks for itself."

Regardless of downplaying their rivalry, Smith and Norman will still be an important, fascinating matchup to keep an eye on Sunday.
