5 offensive breakout candidates for Week 4

The NFL has its share of superstars that can be relied upon for big-time performances on a weekly basis, but some of the most interesting storylines involve the rise of lesser-known players.

Highlighted by a few running backs poised for their most substantial workloads to date, there are a number of players poised for such a jump just a few games into the 2016 season.

Here's a look at a few first- and second-year offensive playmakers with potential for breakout performances in Week 4.

Jordan Howard, RB, Bears

With Jay Cutler out for at least another week, it's a commitment to the running game that represents the Bears' best chance of hanging around against Detroit. Injuries to Jeremy Langford and Ka'Deem Carey have Howard positioned for the lead backfield role, and his success in limited reps over the past two games has shown what he's capable of doing with the ball in his hands. Don't be surprised if the fifth-round rookie runs away with the starting job and relegates Langford to a backup job when he's cleared to return from injury.

Prediction: 23 carries, 116 rushing yards, 1 TD, 4 catches, 50 receiving yards

Chris Conley, WR, Chiefs

Regardless of how much Jamaal Charles plays in his long-awaited return, a stout Steelers defensive front will make it difficult for Kansas City to move the ball on the ground. The far more sensible solution is to attack the NFL's 28th-ranked pass defense through the air. As Pittsburgh rolls coverage to Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce, Conley should get a number chances to beat one-on-one matchups and run free. Look for the athletic sophomore wideout to put together the best game of his young career.

Prediction: 7 catches, 125 yards, 1 TD

Paul Perkins, RB, Giants

An injury to Shane Vereen and the still-uncertain status of Rashad Jennings has created an opening for Perkins to see substantial work. Orleans Darkwa should remain the lead back on early downs, but Perkins provides far more value when it comes time to spread out the Vikings' defense. The Giants would be wise to run him out of shotgun sets and get him the ball in the open field as a pass-catcher. The former UCLA star was among the most elusive backs in this year's rookie class.

Prediction: 8 carries, 48 rushing yards, 5 catches, 50 receiving yards

Hunter Henry, TE, Chargers

Henry remains the Chargers' top tight end as Antonio Gates works his way back from a hamstring injury. After hauling in five receptions for 72 yards in last week's loss to the Colts, it's already clear the rookie pass-catcher has earned Philip Rivers' trust. There's no reason to think Henry won't be even more productive in a shootout against a Saints defense that can't cover anyone.

Prediction: 8 catches, 120 receiving yards, 2 TD

Matt Jones, RB, Redskins

The ability Jones flashed as a rookie had the coaching staff comfortable letting Alfred Morris walk and turning to a new starting back for this season. Jones has tallied just 150 yards and one score across his first three games, but a matchup with the lowly Browns defense will be just what he needs to get going in the right direction. Washington should consistently turn to the run as a means of taking pressure off Kirk Cousins amid his disappointing start, and Jones will make the most of the increased workload.

Prediction: 25 carries, 130 yards, 2 TDs
