Cutler limited in return to Bears practice

Slowly but surely, Jay Cutler is making progress with his sprained right thumb.

The Chicago Bears quarterback made his return to practice on a limited basis Wednesday, after missing each session last week and sitting out Sunday night's loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Whether Cutler is cleared to play in this week's matchup with the Detroit Lions will presumably depend on how the injury responds in the coming days.

Taking part in the week's first practice - however limited - is a positive development in that regard.

Once Cutler receives medical clearance, John Fox and his coaching staff will have a decision to make about their starting quarterback.

Cutler is far and away the roster's most talented signal-caller, and there's little doubt he gives the club its best chance to win, but Fox hinted this week that Brian Hoyer could remain under center.
