Giants' Vereen out for season with triceps injury

Robert Deutsch / USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants running back Shane Vereen will miss the rest of the 2016 season due to a triceps injury that requires surgery, the club announced Monday.

Losing the versatile back is a major blow to the Giants' offense, especially after starter Rashad Jennings sat in Week 3 with a thumb injury. Head coach Ben McAdoo said Jennings would be evaluated during the week to determine his status for Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

If Jennings' absence continues, Orleans Darkwa will likely take over the lead role.

Vereen had a solid start to the season, rushing for 147 yards on 31 carries and adding 75 yards on eight catches.

The Giants also announced rookie safety Darian Thompson won't need surgery on his injured foot, and remains week to week.
