Report: Eagles sat Mathews after ankle 'stiffened'

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews' lack of involvement in Sunday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers was the result of an ankle ailment, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Mathews played only eight snaps, as the Eagles decided to ride their other tailbacks when his ankle "stiffened," according to Rapoport.

Rookie Wendell Smallwood led the Eagles in rushing with 79 yards on 17 attempts. Kenjon Barner contributed 42 yards on eight carries and Darren Sproles took six catches out of the backfield for 128 yards.

It's unclear if Mathews' injury will limit his involvement in the offense moving forward.
