Cam Newton gave Panthers fans a brief scare Sunday when hobbling to the sidelines with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

The star quarterback was unable to put much weight on his leg after an awkward tackle from a Minnesota Vikings defender. He stayed down on the field before making his way back to the sidelines, but he came back into the game just one play after being relieved by Derek Anderson.

Newton's quick return appears to suggest the injury is minor.

As is the case with any quarterback - and particularly one so reliant on his movement ability - his status will be worth monitoring as the game moves forward.

The reigning NFL MVP had the Panthers' offense off to a 10-0 start before the Vikings sacked him for a safety.

More to come.
