Report: Packers' Shields expected back in 'a few more weeks'

A timeline for Sam Shields' return to the field is slowly beginning to take shape.

The Green Bay Packers cornerback received a positive prognosis from a concussion specialist Thursday and is expected to be cleared after "a few more weeks," a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

A concussion forced Shields to the sidelines for an extended stretch late last season. There was some uncertainty surrounding his status after the most recent injury, suffered in this year's opener, marked at least the fourth of his NFL career.

The projection will put Shields out for multiple games beyond Sunday's matchup with the Detroit Lions, but it appears he'll have a chance to return at some point around the midseason mark.

Shields has started 62 games in a Packers uniform and he remains the club's top cover corner in his seventh season after catching on as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Quinten Rollins, Damarious Randall, and Ladarius Gunter will round out Green Bay's lead cornerback group until Shields returns.
