After kneeling during the national anthem before the season opener, Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall said he was motivated by a July run-in with police in Miami.

Now, Miami police have told Nick Jhabvala of The Denver Post that an investigation into the incident is underway, but said they couldn't comment on the matter.

The linebacker said police handcuffed and threatened to Taser him at a restaurant where there were reports of a shooting, after an unidentified woman told them to arrest him.

Marshall said he sat in the back of a police car until another officer radioed in and said he had to be released.

"They told me, 'Look, we're not going to take you in as long as you keep this between us,'" Marshall said.

The 27-year-old has lost several endorsement deals for his decision to kneel during the anthem, and has promised to donate $300 per tackle to Denver charities.
