Vikings place Adrian Peterson on IR

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings placed star running back Adrian Peterson on injured reserve Friday with a torn meniscus, the team announced.

Peterson, who underwent successful surgery Thursday, is reportedly set to miss three-to-four months.

Under the new IR rules, the Vikings don't have to designate him to return, but he'll have to miss a minimum of eight weeks. The earliest he could return is Week 11, though his reported recovery timeline means that date would be unlikely. A playoff return is more feasible.

Jerick McKinnon is set to step in as starter in Peterson's absence, with Matt Asiata also in line for an expanded role.
