Patriots' Garoppolo inactive vs. Texans, Edelman to serve as Brissett's backup

Mark L. Baer / USA TODAY Sports

New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is inactive for Thursday's game against the Houston Texans, meaning wide receiver Julian Edelman will serve as the team's sole backup behind rookie Jacoby Brissett.

Garoppolo was expected to sit after suffering an AC joint sprain in Week 2, but conflicting reports emerged Thursday about his status as the team's backup.

Brissett will have Rob Gronkowski available to him as the tight end will make his 2016 debut after missing time with a hamstring injury.

Should something happen to Brissett, Edelman would play the first significant snaps of his professional career at quarterback. The Kent State product was a three-year starter at the position in college.

The Patriots are off to an 2-0 start without Tom Brady who will return from suspension in Week 5.
