Peterson to undergo knee surgery, reportedly out for 3-4 months

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will undergo surgery Thursday to repair the torn meniscus he suffered in Week 2, head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Wednesday.

He is expected to miss three-to-four months, reports ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Peterson reportedly has what is known as a "bucket handle tear." He opted to undergo a full repair of his meniscus instead of a trim that would have allowed him to just miss several weeks, with the latter carrying more long-term risk.

With his timeline, the Vikings are hopeful he can return for the playoffs, USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero reports.

Now that Peterson is at least out for a significant portion of the season, more of the offensive workload will likely be shifted to Sam Bradford and the passing game.

Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata are set to split the carries in Peterson's absence, but neither have much proven production.

Peterson struggled during the first two weeks of the season, rushing for 50 total yards on 31 carries.
