RG3 won't rush himself back from injury

Robert Griffin III will have an opportunity to be activated from the injured reserve list and return at some point this season, but only if his body allows for it.

The Cleveland Browns quarterback cited a need to defer to doctors when explaining Wednesday that he won't be rushing himself back from the fractured coracoid bone suffered in his left shoulder.

"It's more if the doctors say I'm good and the trainers say I'm good and my body feels good, then that (returning) is the goal," Griffin said, according to Pat McManamon of ESPN. "It's not something where I'm saying all bets are off, it doesn't matter what they say, I'm going back out there.

"I just want to do the right thing and listen to what they have to say."

Griffin is set to have the injury re-evaluated in three-to-four weeks, at which point doctors and the training staff can decide whether he'll require surgery.

Should he make enough progress, the earliest he can be added back to the active roster is in advance of Cleveland's Week 10 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

"It sucks," he said. "It's football."

Josh McCown, who was relegated to the No. 2 spot after Griffin earned the starting job in training camp in preseason, will step in to lead the offense.

The veteran signal-caller completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions across eight starts for the Browns last year.
