Teammates vote RG3 among Browns' captains

Benny Sieu / USA TODAY Sports

Robert Griffin III is taking on an early leadership role in Cleveland.

The former Washington Redskins quarterback, who's getting a fresh start after landing with the Browns in free agency, was elected a team captain by way of a recent team vote.

"I was a little surprised because he hasn't been here very long," head coach Hue Jackson said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. "He should feel good about that."

Whether Griffin can recapture the ability that once had him considered among the NFL's most promising talents remains to be seen.

Being selected a captain is a positive sign when it comes to overcoming the leadership concerns that followed him in the past, and his preseason success indicates a strong fit within Jackson's offense.

Griffin and the new-look Browns kick off the 2016 regular season Sunday versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
