Jared Goff's first opportunity to don an NFL uniform in a regular-season game will have to wait.

Confirming his recent indication that the young signal-caller would enter the season as the No. 3 quarterback, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher told NFL Network's Steve Wyche that Goff will likely be inactive in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Los Angeles is thus set to start the year with Case Keenum under center, Sean Mannion serving as the backup, and punter Johnny Hekker having a role as the emergency third quarterback.

Fisher added that Goff and Mannion will likely switch in Week 2, suggesting that the competition between the two is fairly even, but the Cal product still appears to be facing a long road to the starting job.

Goff struggled in his four preseason appearances, completing just 44.9 percent of pass attempts for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
