The shoulder injury that Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III sustained in the season opener on Sunday is "potentially serious" and could sideline him for an extended period of time, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and FOX Sports' Peter Schrager.

Griffin is reportedly scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.

The fifth-year passer admitted he was in pain after the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but insisted he'd be ready to go in Week 2 despite the sprained shoulder.

Griffin is believed to have sustained the injury when he took a big hit from rookie cornerback Jalen Mills as he scrambled out of bounds.

If Griffin is unable to play, Josh McCown would presumably step into the starting lineup to replace him.
