Rams' Fisher suggests Goff may start season as No. 3 QB

If the season started right now Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff would be the team's third-string option, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Goff, who was selected No. 1 overall in the 2016 draft, came into training camp with a chance to compete for the starting job with Case Keenum but hasn't shown enough to date to earn the job.

Though Fisher has persistently praised the rookie's development, Goff is still behind Sean Mannion on the team's depth chart, meaning the team could redshirt its future franchise quarterback as the Philadelphia Eagles are doing with No. 2 pick Carson Wentz.

"You know, I think it's going to take a little bit more time," Fisher said following Thursday's preseason game. "That's not to say he can't be a two or start, but if we were starting right now, I'd probably have Sean as the two."

The Rams are being cautious with Goff, a departure from the recent trend of No. 1 overall quarterbacks starting immediately. The last four quarterbacks taken first overall (Jameis Winston, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, and Sam Bradford) all started to kick off their professional careers.

"He's much better now than he was when we started," Fisher stressed when asked about Goff's development. "He has made significant progress. He's comfortable. He understands things. He has progressed."
