Report: Cowboys not interested in trading for Sanchez at current salary

Mike DiNovo / USA TODAY Sports

An early return on the draft investment in Dak Prescott is helping the Dallas Cowboys to avoid a desperation move in response to Tony Romo's most recent injury.

The Denver Broncos have contacted the Cowboys about a potential trade, but Dallas isn't interested in a deal at Sanchez's current $4.5-million price tag, according to Jane Slater of NFL Network.

Dallas appears quite comfortable with Prescott, a fourth-round rookie, on account of his preseason showing. As a result, the club may only be in the market for an extremely low-risk addition if they elect to add depth in Romo's absence.

Knowing that Sanchez is likely on the way out after losing a training camp battle to Trevor Siemian, any interested team would presumably pass on trade opportunities in hopes that he'd be released to the open market.

It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys would overlook Sanchez's preseason struggles at that point, but the offense could certainly use some more experience alongside its young signal-caller.

Prescott enters his rookie season as the clear-cut starter until Romo can make his healthy return, while Jameill Showers is tentatively set for a role as his primary backup.
