Report: Panthers won't sign Brown, Whitner after hosting workouts

The Carolina Panthers aren't planning to sign either Stevie Brown or Donte Whitner after hosting the pair of veteran safeties for workouts Saturday, according to Jonathan Jones of The Charlotte Observer.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport had initially reported Carolina was set to add Brown, but quickly issued a correction, referencing a change of plans from the team.

A lack of depth on the back end made it a sensible move for the Panthers to explore their options on the open market, and it's still possible that a veteran addition is made at some point in the coming weeks.

Dean Marlowe, Colin Jones, and Trenton Robinson remain set to begin the season as the primary backups to starting safeties Kurt Coleman and Tre Boston.
