Cowboys' Prescott: 'I'm the smartest QB' in this rookie class

Tony Romo's back injury will reportedly have the Dallas Cowboys turning to Dak Prescott for at least the first month of the regular season, if not longer.

Those snaps will come under far different circumstances than the preseason games in which Prescott's thrived thus far, but the fourth-round rookie believes he's ready for the NFL.

"Knowledge-wise, I think I'm the smartest quarterback that came in this class," Prescott said, according to Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today. "I would love to go on the board and go head-to-head with anybody else. That's how I feel. That's how confident I am."

Prescott has been the star of the preseason through his first three contests, completing an impressive 39-of-50 passes for 454 yards, and five touchdowns.

If the standout performances can be taken as any indication, he could very well provide the Cowboys with a more capable backup plan than they've had at any point in recent memory.

The first-year signal-caller says concepts within the offense he led in college have helped him to make a smooth transition to the professional level.

"The offense we ran at Mississippi State was nothing short of an NFL offense," Prescott said. "The only thing that was different is that we didn't go under center. I swear to you, in (pre-draft) visits, every play they showed me, I could name it. We just called it something different. At another team I visited, they ran the exact same stuff we ran."

Romo will almost certainly return to the starting role upon receiving medical clearance, but Prescott showing well in the meantime could prove to be the difference in Dallas' chances of making a run at the playoffs thereafter.
