Cowboys' Dak Prescott: Could get Week 1 start

Prescott could start Week 1 against the Giants, following the announcement that Tony Romo has a broken bone in his back, The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill reports.

Analysis:

While initial reports suggest Romo's injury will need 6-to-10 weeks to heal, the quarterback actually played with two broken bones in his back for much of the 2014 season. If the Cowboys decide to wait out the injury, Prescott could step in as the short-term starter, with veteran Kellen Moore (broken ankle) already expected to miss most of the season. Undrafted free agent Jameill Showers (2015) is the team's only other healthy quarterback, and Cowboys brass has heaped praise upon Prescott all preseason. While the team will presumably sign a veteran quarterback, it shouldn't be assumed that the new addition will get the starting nod over the fourth-round rookie. Prescott has been fantastic in three preseason games, throwing for five touchdowns and rushing for another two.
