Jim O'Connor / USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots signed linebacker Jonathan Freeny to a two-year extension that will keep him with the club through the 2018 season, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Freeny joined the Patriots last season and racked up a career-high 50 tackles.

The former undrafted free agent, who started his career with the Miami Dolphins, is set to start alongside Jamie Collins and Dont'a Hightower.

The Patriots have several big-name defensive players, including Collins, who are in line for contract extensions.
