Steelers' Sammie Coates: Comes up big with second-teamers

Coates hauled in both of his targets for 66 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Saints.

Analysis:

Although Coates had an impressive stat line, it was Eli Rogers who worked as the No. 3 receiver with the first-team offense, manning the slot while Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton worked outside. It increasingly seems this will be the Steelers' preferred alignment for Week 1, but Coates did at least make his case to have a role in the offense, turning in a strong night with the second-teamers. Given that Brown and Wheaton both have plenty of experience playing in the slot, Coates may still have a shot to beat out Rogers or at least share the job.
